God has commanded his people to “call upon his name” and even to “glory” in it (Psalm 105:1-3). Bible translations from the Reformation era (e.g., Tyndale, Geneva, King James) sometimes transliterated God’s sacred name as “Jehovah.”

Believing this to be an accurate and important decision, the American Standard Version (1901) applied this translation over five-thousand times in the Old Testament. A later revision, however, removed every occurrence. Whence such confusion?

Modern scholarship has generally concluded that the proper pronunciation of God’s name was lost long ago and that the closest approximation is “Yahweh.” The Legacy Standard Bible (2021) has adopted this rendering.
