It is Written makes a unique contribution to our understanding and appreciation of Holy Scripture. Other books on this subject tend to be academic and less accessible for the ordinary reader, and they are usually written from a critical Greek text standpoint, which is accepted without giving readers a fair treatment of the Received Text position. In addition, nothing much helps the reader make sense of the plethora of modern English translations that bewilder Christians today.

What People Are Saying

Every other doctrine depends on the right doctrine of Scripture. It is Written is a faithful and accessible exposition and defence of the full compass of the Biblical doctrine of Scripture. As the Lord Jesus used Scripture to resist the tempter in the wilderness, may we do so as well. It is my prayer that this book will be mightily blessed to that end.

Gerald M. Bilkes
Pastor, Grand Rapids Free Reformed Church, Michigan, USA; Vice President and Professor of Homiletics & Biblical Studies, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids

The compilers of this book are to be commended for providing in a single volume a broad introduction to all the principal branches of the doctrine of Scripture. The contributors have different interests and approach the subject from a variety of perspectives but are united by their love for God’s Word, as well as by their firm commitment to Biblical inerrancy. Whilst technical matters are handled competently, this is a helpful guide rather than an academic treatise. It is informative, accessible, persuasive and spiritually profitable. I hope that it will be read widely, and that it will inspire and renew confidence in the infallible Word of God.

A Biblical view of Scripture is of great importance. The Holy Scriptures present themselves as the Word of God, being able to make us wise unto salvation (2 Timothy 3:15). The Lord in His providence has preserved His Word through the centuries, and continues to do so in our time, providing for us His Word in a reliable translation (without the many omissions and changes found in the Critical Text). We warmly recommend this publication that seeks to make the reader aware of this.

Like an ever-eroding shoreline, the doctrine of Biblical authority has been slowly disappearing due to the influence of Enlightenment thought in the higher institutions of Christian education. The assurance once evoked by the phrase, Thus saith the LORD, has essentially been replaced by the inquiry, What saith the LORD? The critics are quick to assure us that most of the time we know, but they are also honest enough to admit that there is still much work to be done.

It was not always like this and the volume It is Written invites you to return to the pre-modern view of Scripture which led our fathers in the faith to confess that the God who inspired Scripture also preserved it through His special care and providence so that men, in every age, might come to a saving knowledge of Christ and be made complete, thoroughly furnished for every good work. The editor and contributors to It is Written have done a good work in calling today’s Christian back to an implicit faith in the integrity and authority of God’s Holy Word.

The Bible League Trust is to be lauded for this remarkable undertaking to provide the people of God with a comprehensive, multi-faceted, and trustworthy presentation of the doctrine of Scripture. The need for such a work in an age of Babylonian confusion regarding the trustworthiness, integrity, and preservation of God’s inspired and infallible Word should be beyond dispute. May God use this work greatly to strengthen the confidence of His people in the translation of His Word that has borne the stamp of His approval for centuries. Much is at stake here, for the Spirit-inspired Scriptures are “the record that God gave of His Son” (1 John 5:10c). This work underscores the recognition of that profound reality and our obligation to safeguard the integrity of the Father’s record of His beloved Son.

I am grateful and indebted to the authors for a book that exhorts us to become a people of the Book. The emblem of the Calvinistic Methodists of Wales in those golden years of revival was the dove hovering over an open Bible. We earnestly pray for such times again.

Pastor, Tabernacle Cardiff, Cardiff, Wales

This book is much needed in our day. I am delighted to see the men who have come together and contributed to it. In a day of “Yea, hath God said?” where the Bible is undermined even within the professing church, may this book encourage you to have an unwavering confidence in the greatest book of all, the Word of God, the Holy Bible.

Paul Flynn
Pastor, Presbyterian Reformed Church, Stockton-on-Tees, Co. Durham, England

For centuries God’s Word has been under attack. Ever since those words to Eve, “Yea, hath God said,” Satan has tried to twist and corrupt and undermine and even destroy God’s truth. Here though is a book that reminds us of the purity and power of the Holy Scriptures. Important and often neglected subjects such as the canon of Scripture and its preservation are included, as well as encouraging topics, such as the unity and the sufficiency of God’s Word. Readers will therefore be greatly stimulated as they read this book and reflect on the wonder of God’s revelation to man.

Jonathan Wilson
Pastor, Zion Evangelical Baptist Church, Ripon, Yorkshire, England

A comprehensive, helpful and stimulating read. There is a variety and breadth of topics, though technical in places. The two chapters on the infallibility and the sufficiency of Scripture help in dealing with current issues. It gives much food for thought, material for Bible talks and sermons as well as for the soul. This book will profit every true Christian to grow in grace, knowledge, truth, and godliness.

It is Written, published by the Bible League Trust, is a robust handbook of sound doctrine on the Bible and a compelling testament to Biblical spirituality. Its varied subtopics and contributors make it accessible to general readers whilst offering substantial value to advanced students. Some chapters provide introductory insights, while others explore complex, technical matters. The book presents a traditional bibliology — often overshadowed today — before modernism introduced regrettable distortions. Bracing yet irenic, this volume boldly challenges popular misconceptions about the Bible’s nature, its original language texts and manuscripts, and the principles of translation. In their stead, it upholds time-honoured convictions grounded in reverent scholarship and spiritual discernment. Readers need not agree with every point to gain valuable insight from its rich instruction.

In an era marked by widespread confusion, unbelief, and scepticism — often fuelled by Enlightenment philosophy absorbed unwittingly — I warmly commend this vigorous, faithful exposition and defence of the faith once delivered to the saints.

D. Scott Meadows
Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church (Reformed) Exeter, New Hampshire, USA

This excellent book is worthy of a place in every pastor’s library; its contents should be held with conviction in every pastor’s heart. The doctrine of Scripture as set out in this book should be reflected in every church constitution and faithfully taught in every believing home. The chapters are written with pastoral warmth and, where necessary, the technical information is conveyed with clarity.

Whilst the subject matter of this book is essential reading for every seminary student, it is written in a manner that makes it accessible to younger believers who wish to understand the vital issues which ought to guide them in their choice of Bible version. Above all, this book serves to heighten our esteem for and confidence in the Word of God.

A new book lies before me on the doctrine of Scripture. For many years the Hebrew Masoretic Text and the Greek Received Text were the only reliable sources for Bible study and Bible translations. Since the 19th century this has changed and God’s Word has no longer full authority in church and ethical matters. I fully endorse this new study, published by the Bible League Trust, and wholeheartedly recommend it. Several authors from different denominations have contributed and they all agree on the authority of Scripture and the infallibility of God’s holy Word. I hope and pray that God may bless it to the hearts of many, especially for the coming generations.
